What is the best way to really see Iceland? A campervan!

Campervanning around Iceland was one of the coolest experiences that I have had. To drive around the country with my parents in a van was super fun.
By vanning it, we were able to have a way better, and intimate experience. And yes, it may be a bit more cramped and less glamorous than a hotel, but it is definitely worth it! So why should someone choose to campervan around Iceland instead of staying in hotels? Here are four reasons why:
1. It’s a lot easier.
Instead of going from hotel to car, to hotel, you sleep, eat, and drive in your campervan. I remember getting up in the morning after camping in Vik waking up and driving to the black sand beach in my pajamas and making breakfast there.
You bring all of your necessities with you wherever you go. You are able to see most of the country in the same place you eat and sleep, which is nice after a long day of sightseeing.
2. It’s overall a lot cheaper.
Instead of spending your money on renting a car and hotel rooms, you pay less for a car and hotel combo! My mom says that it wasn’t cheap but definitely less than paying for both a hotel and rental car. You also get to save on restaurant meals because you can cook for yourself on the road. This is what our breakfast looked like every day.
3. It’s a lot more fun!
When staying in your campervan, you get to spend more quality time with the people that you are traveling with. You also get to cook breakfast right outside of your “mini home”. It is close quarters, but I thought that that made it even better. It was wayyyy easier to harass my parents! Because I slept on the top bunk, I would throw down my clothes down to their bed when I didn’t want to wake up.
I remember the time when we drove back from Bakkagerdi over an incredible pass overlooking the ocean and valley, and we pulled off to through snow to make breakfast and find sheep. That experience would never have happened if we hadn’t rented a campervan.
4. It brings you a lot more freedom while traveling.
You can stop anywhere you want, (within reason,) and park to sightsee, sleep, or cook. When booking a hotel room, you have a certain time when you need to leave the room, but with a campervan, you can come and go as you please. To keep track of a car and a hotel room every night is a pain to deal with. When I wanted to play soccer where the fairy queen lived I just got out and played!
Have you ever had to wait to get ice cream (in the case of Iceland, skyr) until you found an ice cream store on the street? Well with a campervan, you just reach into your refrigerator and enjoy some dense goodness and keep making mileage down the road.
You can also dry your laundry while you are on the move.
When you get a van, it’s all-inclusive, which makes it easier for you to have a good time and gives you freedom to travel a way that fits your needs.
Campervanning is a great way to see any country whether it’s Iceland, the US, or anywhere else. So instead of renting a car and booking nights to stay in hotels, rent a Campervan!
